INTRODUCTION TO GIONEE S12 LITE

After reviewing the new Gionee S12 that was released in September, 2020. Today I decided to pick up it's lite version called Gionee S12 Lite to review also.

Gionee as we all know are into the market of producing mid range devices. Their devices are strong and durable. I could refer to their devices as Dell in the computer world. Their devices always looks premium with fantastic user experience. But the only problem is their inability to release system updates for their Mobile phones.

HERE IS THE FULL REVIEW OF THE GIONEE S12 LITE

The Gionee S12 Lite was announced and made available September 29, 2020 and I can tell you that this device is currently available in Nigeria as it is going on sale already.

As a low end mid ranger, I would expect you not to expect alot out of this phone because it main entry point is to target those who don't really needs alot of Specifications before buying and using a mobile phone.

My article on the Features and Specifications to consider before buying a mobile phone will help and guide you as it has guided many people in acquiring a mobile phone that suits their specific and individual needs.

Therefore is the Gionee S12 Lite worth buying? And should you dump your current device for this smartphone? And how much does the Gionee S12 Lite cost in Nigeria?

These and many more are the questions we will be answering as we journey together in today's article.

MAIN CAMERA = 13 MP 1080p

PLATFORM = Android 10.0, Amigo UI

RAM = 3 GB RAM

STORAGE = 32 GB

CHIPSET = Helio A25 Octa-core processor

DISPLAY

Like I used to say, large and big screen is not a thing to clamour for this days due to the fact that big screens are now a norm and common trends adopted by OEMs across all Brands these days. Infact the least screen sizes I have seen since 2019 is 6.3 inch displays. Nowadays you could get upto 7.0 inch displays. So this aspect of screen should not pose any threat to an individual planning on getting this device and any other devices.

Gionee S12 Lite has a screen type in the nature of an IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, which is capable of displaying 16 million colors.

How about the screen Size? Guys, the screen size of Gionee S12 Lite is a hug 6.52 inches display. Measuring 102.6 cm2 which is approximately ~80.9% screen-to-body ratio. This has really reduce the screen bezels down to the bearest minimum. Nice one right?

In the aspect of the screen Resolutions is a medium 720 x 1600 pixels, with a 20:9 aspect ratio having an approximately 269 ppi density. The brightness level of this device is close to 450 nits enough for daylight and direct sunlight usage.

The screen also has a water drop notch which houses the front facing camera. This has added beauty to the device

From a user experience point of view I could tell you that in terms of display, this is the best display you could get for a device at this price range or operational range really when compared with other devices from other brands around Nigeria.

CHIPSET OR MICROPROCESSOR

On the aspect of Chipset, the MediaTek Helio A25 (12 nm) is used on the Gionee S12 Lite. This is an upgraded Chipset from the previous ones used few years back with a moderately light speed. Don't forget that this same Chipset was used on the Gionee S12 itself.

Attached to the Chipset is a central Processing unit having an Octa-core configurations. Four pieces of Cortex-A53 all clocked at 1.8 Giga Hertz speed and another four pieces of Cortex-A53 also clocked at 1.5 Gigahertz of speed. All these are for multitasking and auto switching based on the tasks at hand allowing the device to function properly.

The Graphics processor is PowerVR GE8320 model which will enhance the smooth running of light Gaming. Please note that if you are a gamer this device might not be for you. You can check the Reviews section of this blog for a higher Devices at that.

From the user point of view, this Processor tried very well based on light usage. But when it came to tough tasks, the device was lagging behind. And remember this Processor is not power efficient. As it was consuming power and getting heated up during heavy usage.

STORAGE And RAM

Gionee S12 Lite has a maximum of 3 GB RAM and a 32 GB ROM. If you are in need of more RAM and STORAGE you could decide to opt for the main Gionee S12 which is having 4 GB RAM AND 64 GB ROM With a dedicated SD CARD SLOT. The Gionee S12 Lite also has SD card slot though incase an individual intends upgrading the phone storage capacity.

This storage facility should be enough for those who doesn't install much apps and also doesn't care much about storing files in their devices.

MAIN CAMERA

Gionee S12 Lite has a Triple Camera setup. These cameras includes 13 MP functioning for wide pictures with an automatic focus mode. Then the 5 MP serving the purpose of ultrawide and lastly the 2 MP for depth sensing. It features a LED flash and an HDR mode. Gionee S12 Lite can record videos at 1080p@30fps.

SELFIE CAMERA

The Front facing camera is an 8 MP camera. Good enough for such a low end device. It can also record videos at 1080p@30fps

In all the camera performance was not bad. The Amigo UI Optimization and Customisation was great producing very beautiful pictures with the default beauty filters.

In terms of video recording though there were disturbance at the background especially with white light around the environment.

This camera configurations is one of the best deal you could get around at such price range.

PLATFORM OR OS

Gionee S12 Lite is currently operating under the Android 10 operating system with an Amigo UI skin. The UI is smooth but laggy some times. And in terms of security patches and software update Gionee needs to wake up and act properly because they are really lagging behind in this aspect.

CONNECTIVITY

In terms of connectivity these are the features available. They include WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, Radio and USB type 2.0.

The Bluetooth version is an outdated one including the use of the traditional Micro USB port. How I wish these were upgraded to USB C port and Bluetooth 5.1 version.

Remember there is no available IR blaster for remote control used on device like Gionee M5 and M6.

SECURITY

This device has a fingerprint reader or sensor mounted at the rear of the device which has made it more accessible without stress and troubles. The sensor response was great, quick and fast based on the amigo UI Optimization.

Other security options include the face recognition setup which was fast but not secured.and could be unlocked by family members.

Then the traditional pin and pattern which most people prefer, but they should come in as alternative to the finger print sensor in situations where it cannot be used.

BATTERY

A 4000 mAh battery was used on the device and I can tell you that this battery lasted for along time after usage. But the battery would have been preserved longer had it not been because of the Chipset and the screen size. The Chipset is a power consumption hungry one.

In all with heavy usage 10% dropped in every 1 hour 10minutes.

Light usage lasted more entering into its second day of usage.

When Watching HD movies about 5 percent dropped in about 4 hours on flight mode. So interesting right? Gionee really tried here.

Charging Speed: The charging speed calibration is an 18W charging speed with a surported adapter out of the box. So the charging time on the device was 2 hours from 0% to 100% on idleness.

DESIGN LANGUAGE

Point to note is that the device is said to be a plastic body but still confused as to what plastic body glitters like a glass body. The design language is sweet because the device looks great and quality feel in the hand.

Which made me believe that a 4D curved glass was used as the protection on this Gionee S12 device.

The blue colour added extra layer of beauty to the device.

A water drop cut out was made on the display for the front facing camera.

PRICE

This device is currently being priced at at N50, 000. You can purchase it from reliable online platform like from Jumia Here and Konga Here   those are the places WHERE TO BUY In Nigeria.

CONCLUSION

I conclude by saying that most Gionee fans ditched it for brands like Xiaomi brands not because they are good but because they went on sabbatical leave which is really affecting them right now.

But many are tempted to return to this device which is not that bad to be used as a secondary or standby device, or probably for our wives, girlfriends, children, students and so on due to its durability, functionality and camera options.

So I would advise you for and not against this device instead of going for a lower end Tecno or INFINIX or item devices priced similarly but Gionee S12 having a better specs.
The decision is yours. Make the smartest choice
